Celtic Woman - The Show
EM 60233 CD $16
A spectacular presentation that is being compared to “Riverdance,” A Celtic Woman stars five young Irish performers and features gorgeous costumes, splendid staging and dazzling lighting effects. Of the three vocalists, Méav is best known in America, where her two solo albums, Méav and Silver Sea, have been released. Chlöe Agnew is the 16 years old daughter of Twink and oboist, David Agnew. Lisa Kelly has been lead singer with “Riverdance” since 2000. Orlagh Fallon, harp and vocals, is a well established performer in the Dublin cultural scene. Máiréad Nesbitt, fiddle has played with many of Ireland's major pop and traditional artists and has toured with Michael Flatley's, “Lord of the Dance”. The Music Director is David Downes, who has toured extensively with Phil Coulter. Musical support is supplied by The Irish Film Orchestra. The musical mood of the performance is similar to that of the choral portions of “Riverdance”. The obvious inspiration for the three vocalists is new age superstar, Enya. While her influence can be seen throughout the album, the most direct tribute occurs when Méav, Lisa and Orlagh combine to perform Orinoco Flow. Other new age titles include:May It Be (Lisa), Harry's Game (Orlagh) and Walking in the Air (Chlöe). Some of the more popular tunes, She Moved Through the Fair & Danny Boy (Méav), and Isle of Innisfree (Orlagh) are given a lush orchestral backing. A particularly moving moment comes when Chlöe and Orla combine to sing the religious anthem Ave Maria. The DVD is scheduled for airing on PBS in March with a projected US tour this summer.
