BLACK 47 Recorded live at the Wetlands on St. Patrick's Day, 2001; this is the first album to feature Joseph Mulvanerty on uilleann pipes and he rises to the challenge. His ensemble playing with the trombone and sax strengthens the distinctive sound of Black 47. Larry Kirwan is in great form as he carries the vocals on such old favorites as Big Fellah, Fire of Freedom, Bobby Sands MP and Rockin' the Bronx. There are three tracks on this album not available elsewhere. Our Lady of the Bronx was on the EP for EMI, but not included when Fire of Freedom was released. This is vintage Kirwin and cause enough to buy the CD. Johnny Byrne's Jig, written for their deceased sound man, turns sax and trombone into trad instruments. Biko, the cover of Peter Gabriel's song, has an appropriate reggae sound. |
