The Wolfe Tones
The Wolfe Tones are Ireland’s premier performers of “rebel” or “republican” music. There are countless numbers of great Irish ballads describing the struggle to free their homeland from the often onerous burden of English rule. For over 30 years Derek Warfield, Brian Warfield, Noel Nagle and Tommy Byrnes, recorded those great songs on over 15 albums. Memorable rebel ballads include: Sean South of Garryowen, The Boys of the Old Brigade, James Connolly, The Broad Black Brimmer, A Nation Once Again, Down by the Glenside, Joe McDonnell, The Men Behind the Wire, Kevin Barry and The Guilford Four. Not all the Wolfe Tones’ songs concerned republican matters - some were humorous like The Big Strong Man and Jamie Mac I’m Nearly Forty. Derek Warfield has officially left The Wolfe Tones and begun recording on his own. The other three members have also released albums on their own.
